Course objectives

At the end of the course the student must be able to know: write the formula of an inorganic and organic compound, recognize the type of chemical bond, know how to balance a redox and non-redox reaction with related stoichiometric calculations, know how to calculate the pH of a solution, knowing how to recognize an organic functional group and knowing its reactivity. Know the chemical structure of biomolecules

General Chemistry: Homogeneous and heterogeneous matter and mixtures. Atoms and molecules. Electron, proton, neutron. Atomic number. Mass number. Isotopes. Atomic Weight. Molecular Weight. Definition of Mole. Fundamental chemical laws. Definition of chemical reaction. Balancing of a chemical reaction and stoichiometric calculations. Atomic structure. Electronic configuration of elements Periodic table of elements. Groups and periods. Metals and non metals. Chemical properties of the elements and periodicity. Valence electrons. Octet rule.
Chemical bonds. Traditional and IUPAC nomenclature of inorganic compounds.
